Real loses value in Paraguay: what it means for your border shopping
Guia 3 newsroom · edited by Annie GrellmannPortuguêsEspañol
The dollar at R$ 5.21, one of the highest in the series, made the real drop 2.4% in Paraguay, reducing its purchasing power in guaraníes.
Between August 29 and September 29, 2026, the real lost 2.4% of its value against the guaraní (R$ 1 = 1.132 guaraníes), while the official dollar (PTAX) rose 0.3% and was quoted at R$ 5.21 – one of the highest levels in the last 135 days recorded by Guia 3. This depreciation means that when you exchange reais for guaraníes, you will receive fewer local currency units for the same amount of reais, directly affecting the cost of purchases in Ciudad del Este.
What this means for you:
- If you usually bring R$ 200 for shopping, today you will receive about 5.4 guaraníes less than a month ago, reducing your purchasing power.
- Use the official dollar rate (R$ 5.21) to calculate the amount in guaraníes before buying and compare it with the guaraní rate (R$ 1 = 1.132 guaraníes).
- Consider bringing a bit more cash or using a credit/debit card that offers a more favorable exchange, but always check the applied rate.
