Eight native-bird chicks were born from eggs seized by the Federal Revenue Service in Foz do Iguaçu on Saturday (24). The eggs were being illegally transported by a Chinese couple on a bus bound for Rio de Janeiro.

According to IBAMA, seven of the chicks belong to the ramphastid family (toucans) and one to the psittacine family (parrots and macaws). The hatchings occurred after the eggs were sent to the environmental agency for care.

The seizure took place during a routine inspection of a bus passing through the Customs of Foz do Iguaçu. The 32 eggs were hidden in thermal and cardboard boxes modified with electronic circuits, fans and sensors, and some were placed in the lining and seams of a passenger’s jacket. The temperature-control devices were turned off at the time of the stop.

The passengers claimed they would be paid R$ 3,000 to transport the eggs to Galeão International Airport in Rio de Janeiro. Federal Revenue estimated that each egg could be worth up to €50,000 in Europe, amounting to as much as €1.6 million for the shipment, although the actual value has not been confirmed.

The couple was not arrested, but Federal Revenue will forward fiscal complaints for criminal prosecution to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office. Of the 32 eggs, 24 remain without information on their potential to hatch.
