Flood keeps Health alert in Ciudad del Este

The emergency caused by the flood continues to raise concerns in the low-lying neighborhoods of Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, two weeks after the Paraná River level rose. Doctors from the Regional Hospital and the Governorate are working on health assistance in shelters, especially in San Rafael, San Agustín and Remansito, where approximately 1,300 families were affected.

The Tenth Health Region reinforced care in the shelters. The director warned that the situation requires constant vigilance, as sanitary conditions can change daily. He highlighted the need to coordinate resource distribution to avoid some shelters receiving duplicate assistance while others remain unattended.

Among the identified problems are skin conditions, respiratory infections, hypertension, diabetes and other diseases that require ongoing monitoring. Public Health received about 1,000 ointments and oral rehydration salts, which have already been distributed to displaced families.

To expand care capacity, a contingency plan was prepared with the Regional Hospital of Ciudad del Este and management is underway to coordinate bed availability with the Social Forecast Institute (IPS). Teams also maintain vaccination activities and update immunization schedules.

The head of the Primary Health Care Department (APS) reported that Family Health Units (USF) operate in vulnerable sectors of Ciudad del Este, Presidente Franco, Hernandarias and Minga Guazú, conducting controls in shelters and monitoring potential digestive and respiratory outbreaks.
