Friendship Bridge queue on Black Friday 2026: which day and what time to cross

Guia 3 newsroom · edited by Annie GrellmannPortuguêsEspañol

Ciudad del Este Black Friday 2026 runs from November 19 to 22, and Friday the 20th is Black Consciousness Day in Brazil, the day with the most Brazilians on the bridge. Cross early, before the shops open, and head back before late afternoon: going over, the queue builds at Paraguayan customs; coming back, at Brazilian customs.

Quick answer: Ciudad del Este Black Friday 2026 runs from November 19 to 22 (Thursday to Sunday). Friday the 20th is Black Consciousness Day, a national holiday in Brazil, so expect more Brazilians on the Friendship Bridge that day. If you can, go on Thursday, Saturday or Sunday. Cross early, before the shops open, and come back before late afternoon. Going into Paraguay the bottleneck is Paraguayan customs; coming back, it is Brazilian customs.

The question for shoppers is not whether there will be a queue. There will be. The question is where it builds and at what time of day it is lightest. This guide brings together what official sources and Brazil's Federal Revenue Service (Receita Federal) have said about the event, without promising a magic time slot that nobody has measured.

The dates and the busiest day

The 15th edition of Ciudad del Este Black Friday runs from Thursday, November 19, to Sunday, November 22, 2026. The 2025 event was the 14th (La Nación, Paraguay, 24/11/2025), and Paraguay's Chamber of Deputies called the 2026 event the "fifteenth" on 29/07/2026.

The general hours published on the official event website are 8 am to 6 pm. That is the event's reference only: each shop sets its own hours, and some announce opening in the early hours of the morning. Check the shop you want to visit before you leave.

The day that changes the picture is Friday, November 20, Black Consciousness Day, a national holiday in Brazil (Primera Plana, 24/07/2026). With the day off, more Brazilians are likely to cross right in the middle of the event. If your dates are flexible, Thursday and Sunday tend to be better choices than Friday.

How much traffic to expect

The most reliable yardstick is last year's event. From November 20 to 23, 2025, the Receita Federal counted 187,538 pedestrians, 240,796 vehicles and 159,440 motorcycles on the Friendship Bridge (figures published by La Nación, Paraguay, on 24/11/2025). The Ciudad del Este Chamber of Commerce reported more than 300,000 visitors for that edition.

Those are four-day figures, and the 2026 event falls in the same stretch of the calendar, this time with a Brazilian holiday in the middle.

Where the queue builds: going and coming back

The queue is not the same in both directions, and knowing why helps you pick your time.

  • Going into Paraguay: the hold-up is Paraguayan customs, at the Ciudad del Este end of the bridge.
  • Coming back to Brazil: the hold-up is Brazilian customs in Foz do Iguaçu, where the Receita checks luggage and the duty-free allowance.

That description comes from the head of the Receita Federal office in Foz (Rádio Cultura, 04/09/2026). In the same interview, the Receita said it is considering opening the lower area of the customs complex, currently used by trucks, to tourists. At the time this guide was published, the measure was still being planned and had not been confirmed. Do not count on it when you plan.

What time to cross

There is no public hour-by-hour measurement of the customs queue, so this guide does not give a time as a number. The advice follows from the two bottlenecks:

  1. Go early, before the shops open. If you reach Paraguayan customs at the same time as the crowd heading for opening time, you hit the outbound peak. Crossing before that puts you on the other side while the queue is still forming.
  2. Come back before late afternoon. On an ordinary day, shops in downtown Ciudad del Este open around 7 am and close between 4 and 5 pm. When they close, everyone heads back at once and Brazilian customs takes the brunt. During Black Friday many shops stay open longer, which spreads the return a little, but late afternoon is still the busiest time.
  3. Avoid Friday the 20th if you can. It is the holiday in Brazil.

For the pattern on normal days, see the guide to the best time to cross the Friendship Bridge.

What our measurements show, and what they do not

The live bridge queue page shows readings from our traffic probes and the camera feed when it is available. Read the number for what it is: on the Friendship Bridge, the probe measures the access road to the bridge and cannot see the customs queue. It can show free-flowing traffic while the booths are packed. Use the page as a signal for the approach road and the camera as visual confirmation.

The Integration Bridge is not for shoppers

The Integration Bridge, between Foz do Iguaçu and Presidente Franco, looks like an alternative route, but it does not work for shoppers. Private cars may only cross from 7 am to 1 pm, only with residents of Foz do Iguaçu, Ciudad del Este, Presidente Franco and Hernandarias who hold the DTVF border document, and goods bought in Paraguay cannot be brought through it, not even within the allowance (Rádio Cultura, 05/09/2026). Details are in the guide to the Integration Bridge and the DTVF.

Staying overnight in Ciudad del Este

To avoid crossing twice in one day you can sleep on the Paraguayan side, but book early. According to Senatur (Registur) data published by InfoNegocios on 11/09/2026, Ciudad del Este has 68 hotels, with occupancy of 95% to 100% at peak times. See where to stay in Ciudad del Este.
