Guia 3 newsroom · edited by Annie GrellmannUpdated on EspañolPortuguês

Closure follows flow reaching nearly eight times historic average

Iguaçu National Park remains open, but the walkway, the lower viewpoint at Espaço Naipi, the São João Circuit, Espaço Usina, the Poço Preto path and the Canafístula trail are closed by the flood. On Tuesday 13 the walkway railings were removed, for the first time since 2023.

Iguaçu National Park, in Foz do Iguaçu, remains open, with some points closed by the Iguazú River flood, according to the Foz tourism department, the concessionaire Urbia+Cataratas and ICMBio:

Why the railings came off

On Tuesday 13 crews began removing the walkway's safety railings, something not done since 2023. With water running over the structure, the railings resist the current and whatever it carries; without them, the risk of damage drops. The walkway was not dismantled: only the railings were removed.

The park's protocol, according to the tourism department:

  • the walkway closes when flow passes 8.5 million liters per second with a rise forecast;
  • the railings come off between 9 and 12 million L/s with a rising trend;
  • reopening depends on the flow dropping, a technical inspection and an engineer's sign-off, so there is no set date.

How the river is doing

At the ANA gauge at the Hotel das Cataratas, the Iguazú reached 15,800 m³/s at 4 pm on 14 October, the highest value in our series, more than ten times the historical average of 1,500 m³/s. On the Argentine side, the Upper and Lower trails closed again on 14 October.

If you are visiting

With the walkway closed, you see the falls from the trail viewpoints, soaked in spray at this flow: bring a raincoat. Today's status in are Iguazú Falls open today?.
